I think this is the first bit of chinese culture that I absolutely disagree with.
UPDATE: This basically means that “If the Master teaches the Apprentice everything, then the Master will starve”. In other words, it’s normal in Chinese society use the secrecy of information as power for yourself. Quite a variance from the Open Society way of democratizing and sharing information.

That sounds awful! Is there more to the story? (Possibly Google Translate wasn’t 100% accurate too?)
